The Power of Guided Math

When we joined forces with Laney Sammons in 2014, we knew Guided Math was going to be a special and exciting addition to ERG services. Alice and I were ready for the challenge of going the next level with supporting math teachers and excited to have an expert math instructor willing to mentor our team of math consultants.

What we didn’t know about this partnership was the excitement Guided Math can bring to both teachers and students. Over the past five years, we have had the good fortune of being a part of building math capacity in buildings and watching the rise of math test scores that follows (which happen to be what most clients state as their two primary goals).

However, as our Guided Math projects have unfolded live in classrooms, we have witnessed something just as important – or perhaps more important – than test scores. The following snippets have become regular occurrences in math classes we coach.

We see students smile when their teachers say it’s time for math.

We have teachers chase us down the hall to invite us to come and view their Guided Math lessons.

We experience teachers shedding tears as they admit they never really knew how to teach math until their Guided Math training and implementation coaching.

We observe increased confidence with teachers teaching math and increased confidence with students learning math.

We see students and teachers come to the realization that math really does connect to everyday life.

These gems we are fortunate to uncover as we coach in classrooms inspire us, intrigue us, and collectively push us forward with our mission of growing all learners in mathematics.
