Katie's Beach Read #1

We are at the beach this week and fortunately a lot of reading has gone on.  I have asked Katie, my rising 7th grader, to weigh in this week with one of her favorite reads from our week at the beach. She is the author of the following….

The name of one of the books I read this week is called The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester.  Basically this book is a science fiction book about a girl named Piper McCloud (which is really funny because she can fly).  Once she figured out she could fly, people came to take her away and “help” her control her flying.  It turns out these people are not really trying to help her but force her to stop flying.  In the end, she continues to fly despite the efforts of all these people.

This book should be made into a movie because it has a lot of good describing scenes.  Some of the people are hard to imagine, but it could be enhanced on the screen and I would really like to see how they use the descriptive language to make a movie.  The suspense of this book would be interesting to see in a movie.  In fact, the first line in the book is “Piper decided she wanted to jump off the roof.”  That is a wonderful first line.

I think one of the messages in the book is that if you aspire to do something you can achieve it.  People kept telling her over and over that flying was bad even though she thought it was good.  She had to realize that flying did not make her a freak of nature and that she was actually special.  At the end of the book, Piper says, “Ever wonder why they’re so many scared and sad people out there?  Flying’s alright, but if I had the chance, I’d teach ’em to be happy instead.”

I really think everyone should read this book.  It’s just awesome- READ THIS BOOK!
